Swell is a set of 2 dynamic silk waves designed, dyed, and quilted by artist Lauryn Smith in 2020-21. Ceiling-mounted and controlled by pulleys, Swell ‘s wave forms change, much like a sail, in response to both human adjustments and environmental conditions. With aeronautical engineer Adrian Avallone, Smith is designing an outdoor iteration of Swell that will follow programmed wave measurement series to serve as a dynamic physical model of historically important tests and findings.
